Virus Scan 7.1 for Windows XP and 2000

Use this software at your own risk. Through a licensing agreement, this software is available to students, staff and faculty free of charge. However, it is not supported through Bethel's ITS Department or the vendor. Fully supported versions of this software and other antivirus products are available at retail stores selling computer software. Keep in mind that a risk of something going wrong always exists when installing software on a computer. If you chose to use the software provided by Bethel, you are accepting this risk and assuming responsibility to resolve an unfavorable outcome yourself.

Important Information
Before installing this software you must remove any antivirus software currently on your computer.

Download Virus Scan Installer

Installation Instructions

This version of VirusScan will automatically update virus definitions on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 4 am. It is important to leave your computer on during the night every week on one of these days to keep the definitions current and your system safe.

Double-click on the installer

Click Next in the introduction window.

In the licensing window, set the expiration to perpetual and then read and accept the terms if you are inclined to do so. You are not obligated to use this software and/or to accept the licensing terms.

If you have a previous version of VirusScan installed you will see the Previous Version window. If this occurs, do not check the Preserve Settings box.

In the Setup Type window, select Typical.

Click Install.

Installation progress is indicated by the status bar.

After the installation has finished you will see the following window. If you have a network connection or an active modem connection, leave the Update Now and the Run On-Demand Scan boxes checked. Click Finish and be prepared to wait a significant amount of time while your computer is scanned for viruses.

If you do not have a way to download current virus definitions, uncheck the boxes and click Finish. Information on how to scan your computer is located at the end of this document.

The scan can take a long time to complete.

Updating and Performing a Scan Without an Internet Connection

To perform a complete scan of your computer you will need to acquire a copy of the latest virus definitions. This can be done if you have access to a computer with an Internet connection and a CD burner. To obtain current definitions, go to the Network Associates website:

http://www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/default.asp

When you arrive at the site, download the SuperDat file and install it on your computer by double-clicking on it. After it is installed, access the Start menu > All Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console.

In the window that appears, select Scan All Fixed Disks and click on the green arrow in the upper right of the window to start the scan.
