Securing Wireless Access Points and Routers

Why Do I Need to Secure My Wireless Access Point/Router?
You need to secure your access point/router to protect our network and your computer from unauthorized intruders. An unsecured access point/router provides an open door onto our network and into your computer. Additionally, an intruder could use your access point/router to conduct activities violating Bethel’s computing acceptable use policy that are traceable to you.

How Do I Secure My Wireless Access Point/Router?
The first step to securing your access point/router is to determine what security measures it employs. Depending on the device it may use all three of the following security measures:

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP): 64-bit and 128-bit
Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA)
MAC Address filtering

At the very least you need to have Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) enabled. If your access point/router supports Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA), this security measure currently offers the greatest level of protection. Refer to the documentation that came with your device to set up and use the security measures. If you don’t have documentation, it can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.
